I'm a little late with this, but ThinkFree Office can write xls files. It's Java-based and so a tad slow, and it costs $50 for the office, but it really is a well-featured set of applications. Considering you're taking a speed hit if you run a Fink-ized XDarwin app, the Java speed hit shouldn't bother you. It's cross-platform and OS X compatible.
