Or they are signed up to the mailing list at work, or reading their
home email at work, and the Mac is their home machine.  I think you'll find
*that* particular situation much more common.  Point of fact, I use
Linux at work, to read this list among many others, as well as having
Linux, Windows (for the kids), and my iBook at home.  And until I get
the wireless card for my laptop, I'm not going to be reading email with
it, either.

Just saying that having multiple machines is more common than you think,
especially if you count work machines.
