The prerelease version of xmaxima is quite buggy under many window managers; have you tried following the advice in the package description? (do "fink describe maxima" on the command line). Are you having any trouble with the command line version of maxima? That ought to be working.
Meanwhile, I think I will submit an info file for 5.9rc1 (release candidate), which is much better behaved. I have been waiting for it to actually get elected, but that seems to be taking a while. So check back in a couple of days for an upgraded maxima.
