What's really weird here is that a 'fink list gmp' shows that I
already have gmp-4.1-2 installed.

So I should be more precise. A fink self-update showed that a
newer version of gmp-shlibs was available, which I tried to
update to, and failed (with a similar if not exact error to
below).

Then I thought, maybe I should try reinstalling gmp, so I did a
"fink reinstall gmp": that's what provoked the error
below. Presumably, then, it's not necessarily the gmp package
that's causing the problem: it's gmp-shlibs that has the problem.
