The reason we separated the two trees is that Apple changed compilers with the 10.1/10.2 switch, and a number of Fink packages need to be recompiled under 10.2. We are handling this by using higher version numbers in the 10.2 tree so that things are recompiled automatically. If you choose to use packages from the 10.2 tree under 10.1, and if you ever subsequently upgrade to OS X 10.2, you should remove your Fink installation entirely and reinstall from scratch, to avoid problems from things which weren't recompiled under 10.2. Also, some packages in the 10.2 exploit 10.2-specific features and won't work under 10.1. There *have* been some updates to the 10.1 tree since we separated them, but as time goes on, those will be fewer and further between.
