mysterious reason. I think you will have to do an install from scratch.
Symptoms: Several zero-length files in /sw/bin, in particular gzip and tar.
Cure: Erase the zero-length files.

P.S. - Before all of this happened (i.e. about a week ago), I used 'sudo
dselect' and did an update-then-install. However, 'fink --version' still
says I'm using 0.4.0. I tried to do an update to 0.4.1 without using
dselect, but only could get the new package descriptions ('sudo apt-get
update'); I couldn't figure out how to do the actual updates (if any).
