In case anyone is interested, I finally had a chance to write
some test code, and determined that the problem is in libmikmod rather
than xmms or esd. I couldn't find anything obviously wrong, so I
sent off a bug report to the mikmod maintainer, and hopefully that
will lead somewhere.
