I used fink to install mysql on two machines running OS X 10.2.1. This may be more of a mysql question than a fink question, but since I used fink to install it I'll ask here.

On one of them, the installation appeared to be straightforward and successful, but I get this error message that I don't know how to fix:

macq[167]% mysql -u root mysql
ERROR 1045: Access denied for user: 'root@localhost' (Using password: NO)

I would appreciate a solution, an explanation of what's wrong, or anything that will help.

I've tried a couple of things I found by searching past emails to fink, but they haven't worked (enabling root user, a daemonic command).

In the other machine the mysql_install_db step failed due to an inability to lookup the hostname. I used the -force option to manually complete the installation. On that machine the mysql -u root mysql command succeeds and I can procede to create users, grant them privileges, and so on.

It's puzzling to me that installation would succeed on one machine but not the other, when they are, on the whole, configured close to the same.

Thanks
-Don
