Well, I for one can verify that the 0.4.1 binary installer does cause such weirdness. I installed 0.4.1 on a fresh 10.1.5 system, and after a reboot the hard drive icons disappeared, and then the window server began crashing in the manner that June Van Dyke has described.
If one sees the wrong permissions of the root directory "/" in time, they are easy to fix, as has been described in other messages.
When one runs the installer for the first time or removes its receipt directory in /Library/Receipts before rerunning it, the problem doesn't seem to appear.
I am now reinstalling 10.1 (I did not get the fink-users digest in time to read about fixing the permissions... D'oh!) in the hopes that this will fix things. I **WILL NOT** be installing fink using the binary installer on this system until this issue is worked out! BTW, I am using a 9500 180/MP with OSX installed using XPostFacto.
