For xdvi, you can actually do a binary install and get a version later
than that you can get from source in the stable tree.  Just use

sudo apt-get install xdvi

You'll get the same version as that which is in the unstable source
tree.  

I've cc'ed the maintainer--the stable source should be at the same
version as the binary, if not higher.
