Hi,
Everybody knows frequent backup is very nice, or even necessary. But
y'know people -- including myself, of course --- are just lazy and want
to postpone until the "final" day (and nobody knows when it is,
though). What's worse, people are not as cautious as they should be,
and don't check out information available on web pages as carefully as
needed.
Also, as a typical Mac user, you may think you don't want to spend
another dozens or even hundred buck to get a backup utility.
Okay, at any rate, if your backup were easier, you would have done it
more
often, you think.
Unlike on traditional Mac OS, backup on Mac OS X is VERY EASY if you
partioned your internal drive or have external drives. In the following
web page, Mike Bombich explains how to move /Users directory to other
parition.

In place of "ditto" mentioned in this page, you can use Carbon Copy
Cloner (mentioned as "CCC" in Daniel's post). CCC is a GUI software and
is more friendly to traditional Mac users. You can get this at:
http://www.bombich.com/software/ccc.html
If you move /Users onto another partion, reinstallation of OS should be
much easier: it just takes a long.
Personally, I don't hesitate reinstall OS whenever I find it necessary:
even Apple's updaters can damage your system these days. Anyway, to
minimize potential damage, YOU ARE STRONGELY ENCOURAGED TO BACK UP YOUR
OWN STUFF EVERY TIME YOU RUN UPDATERS, WHETHER FROM APPLE OR FINK OR
WHATEVER.
On many systems including Apple, Red Hat Linux, M$ Windows, default
installation scheme doesn't seem to promote frequent backups.
As for OS X, at least "/" (root) and "/Users" directories should be on
*different* partitions on default installation. That should ease you to
back up and reinstall a lot.
Cheers,
Kow
