It was a bad cable. I head to get out the heavy artillery to test this: an actual by God VT-520 and my Telenex DLM. It was a bad RJ45-to-DB25S adapter from Cisco. Oy.
Still, my position about minicom's clumsiness and the absence of tip(1) remains unchanged. I'd be willing to learn how to port tip to IOKit based on the available FreeBSD sources if someone would lend me a hand. I've been doing mostly Perl for the past 10 years, but my C is still in there....
Have you tried compiling 'tip' against Darwin?
