Hmmm, try the effect of running fvwm with 6 virtual screens (I usually run
rooted) on top of apple's rootless-only X11. Yes, you get 6 virtual
screens, all decorated with the same non-X stuff you are running!! Pretty
wild, but not what I optimally want...unless there is a way to "unstick"
the non-X stuff and populate it sensibly around the 6 desktops.

It is trying to run xterm with /usr/local/bin/bash, though, so it fails,
since bash in now /bin/bash (since 10.2?). I had a confusing version of
this problem with fink installed stuff, due to my shell being set to
/usr/local/bin/bash (had to fix it with netinfo manager once I finally
figured it out). But I've no idea why it is doing this under Apple's
X11...I can find no trace of it in my configuration. (I fixed it by
editing the Applications menu to have xterm -e /bin/bash). Anybody else
seen this or is it something I've messed up?

OTOH, the cut'n'paste is not working as I hoped. I can highlight then
middle-click to move stuff between X windows, but can't get apple-V to
paste into Terminal. What works (mostly) with XDarwin in full-screen mode
is to return to non-X and do apple-V (and vice versa). At least it works
for many apps, and those it doesn't (e.g. Netscape) you can do an
intermediate paste in an xterm window to get round the problem.

I want highlight->middle-click to cut'n'paste and 6 virtual screens for
_everything_ (and mouse in window to focus)! What chance of getting this
as configuration options in Apple's stuff???

I can confirm that it doesn't in any way interfere with my already
fink-installed xfree86/XDarwin stuff. I removed nothing, and installed
without adding the X11 config (the default, as Kow pointed out).
