The problem is with imlib, not libpng or libpng3:

imlib-1.9.10-9 is the latest version stable, and if you downgrade to it,
GNOME should be happy.  
I did it, and I got all of my icons back on Evolution, and my Eterm
scrollbars.

imlib-1.9.14-2 is the latest version in unstable, and leads to the
libpng problems.
