Oddly enough, both problems were fixed by downgrading to the stable version of imlib. Maybe the window titlebar is a png? Or the menu? It was every window with the titlebar appearing up off the screen. At least in xgalaga, Eterm, and Mozilla.

Thanks for everyone on this. The developers did a tremendous job in resolving this. Problems like this are to be expected with every development project. The Fink team is head and shoulders above the rest in the speed and concern they show for their products.

As for others who made their own personal tempest in a teacup about this, they have much growing up to do. They wrongly bad-mouthed Fink in a forum Fink members could not be expected to properly defend themselves. They expected bug-free software from the unstable tree (That's why they call it unstable). But mostly, they damaged their own reputation among their peers.

This looks like two separate problems:

1) The lack of a startup splash and icons is because there's an
incompatibility betwen libpng and libpng3. This was brought out by one
of the developers on Sunday, but a solution hasn't been brought out, as
far as I know.

2) The window position issue shouldn't be related to that. Does every
window open at the top of the screen?

A couple of days ago I started having trouble with gnome. Specifically,
I get a white rectangle where I used to get the startup picture and
none of my panel icons draw. Also, windows draw at the topmost part of
the screen where the menubar is, so I can't drag them.
