The true question is whether your "head" executable is still the one that came with Mac OSX, or whether it has been overwritten by some perl module, see Fink FAQ #4.4 http://fink.sourceforge.net/faq/comp-general.php#head
This can give you the error you described. It would have given you some other messages about the head command earlier on, too.
