Thanks Max & David,

The machine was able to pass the tests on the Diagnostics CD, but your
hints reminded me that sometimes re-seating memory helps.  After I did
that I was able to run the machine overnight simultaneously building
xemacs, tcltk and fvwm with a load average >3.
