I have a Canon S450 and the same issue. :-/
When I first got OS X (version 10.1), I tracked it
down, and apparently there is something wrong with
Canon's drivers. Unfortunately, I no longer have a
trail or a reference to anything useful on the
topic. I'm sure it's still out there somewhere.
It's getting easier and easier to generate PDFs
these days (tex file -> pdflatex, or emacs ->
ps-spool-buffer -> postscript file -> ps2pdf), and
then I just print them from Preview.app or Acrobat
Reader. It's not quite as easy as piping things to
lp or lpr, but it works for the small volume of
printing I do. Arguably a kluge, but it works.

I haven't tried printing from OpenOffice, but I
notice that it also has a "print to PDF" option.
