Looking at NetInfo Manager I've noticed that instead of the 'pgsql' group there is a 'postgres' group. Could it be the reason of my problems? How can I fix it? And what is the cause of this mismatch?

The user name was changed in postgresql-7.3.2 to "postgres" instead of "pgsql" because a lot of tools expected the "root" postgresql user to be it, and I wanted to have it "correct" before putting postgresql into stable. You might be able to go into /sw/var/postgresql/data/ and see if there's somewhere that it's looking for the default superuser.
I'm not sure what's happening, it could be that you need to re-add the pgsql user and group and then dump the database, then reinitialize it with the new user.
I'm just guessing at this point, I'll need to do some experimenting, but I don't know if I'll have an answer for you soon, I'm going to be out of town until next week. :(
