pango1 was for me the only thing holding up an update-all -- it wanted 
pango1-xft built with the old xfree86, not system-xfree86. I have no 
idea why it worked, but what i did was first install pango1 with 
apt-get (pango1 was a dependency, not already installed), then update 
it, by itself.
