Did You install via fink?
Yes. I wouldn't have committed the package to the CVS repository if it hadn't worked for me, on at least 3 different machines. What compiler did you use for its compilation? Not gcc-3.3, I hope.
On one machine (Powerbook) I have the new Dec2002gccUpdater.dmg installed, but

On another machine (iBook) without the gccUpdater the same Problem occured with scribus 0.9X
