I tried making an .xinitrc with xterm in it an no change. What
solved it is I reinstalled the older X11, so that now at least I have
a working X11, and for better or worse I actually have some work to
do for which I need X11. I will wait for Panther.

Thanks for the help.

Roy,

For what it's worth now that you've given up, I managed to get a successful install of Apple's X11 1.0 by installing it over the top of Fink's XFree86 4.3.0-2. I've got a '~/.xinitrc' with '/sw/bin/startkde' as my desktop and window manager. I had the latest unstable kde already installed. Since the installation I've successfully done fink selfupdate-cvs & fink update-all without any problems. I do have an anomaly in 'rootless' mode: the button bar on the shell window doesn't appear unless I select my theme again using the KDE Control Center. I don't have this problem in the 'fullscreen' mode. Apple's X11 1.0 finally allows KDE to have multiple desktops as well. Apple's X11 1.0 also doesn't have the 'Caps-Lock' problem I had with Fink's XFree86 4.3.0.

Good luck,

Evan
