Right, if you've followed the list, the december updater replaces the assembler, and that affects you regardless of which gcc you're using.
g77 is broken if you install the updater in any way, period. Whether it will be fixed in a future release has yet to be seen, but that's why we're recommending against the updater on the web site.

didn't, we would have made something else be the default. So keep
your cotton-pickin' hands off our defaults. Don't touch. Consider
them mandatory. "Mandatory defaults" has a nice ring to it.
