okay. so i did what they recommended (force removing system-xfree86) and starting the install over again.

but i think i'm going to end up where i started again. i won't know until it gets to that point though.

i feel that way because it asks to pick one of the following:

(1) pango1-dev: I18N text handling system convinience package
(2) pango1-xft1-dev: I18N text handling system: for XFree86 (<< 4.3)
(3) pango1-xft2-dev: I18N text handling system: for XFree86 (>= 4.3)

so i pick the FIRST one, since i'm NOT using xfree86 from fink. i'm using apple's.

THEN, it goes to the next one and asks to choose one of the following:

(1) pango1-xft1-dev: I18N text handling system: for XFree86 (<< 4.3)
(2) pango1-xft2-dev: I18N text handling system: for XFree86 (>= 4.3)

so it looks like it's ignoring what i picked in the first step. so i go ahead and choose the more recent version (2).

finally, i'm prompted for the following choice:

(1) system-xfree86: Placeholder package for manually installed XFree86
(2) xfree86-base: XFree86 libraries, utilities, clients and data
(3) system-xtools: Placeholder package for manually installed Xtools
(4) xfree86: XFree86 distribution
(5) xfree86-base-threaded: XFree86 libraries, utilities, clients and data

and, obviously, i chose the first option. i don't want to actually install xfree86, just the placeholder.

so that's where i am now, and it's compiling. i'll post what happens.

below is the result of trying to install again. for some reason, i just think that fink _thinks_ it needs to install xfree86 because of pango, but shouldn't it just use the _already installed_ system-xfree86 instead?

Ok: this looks like you selected xfree86 by accident instead of system-xfree86 at one of the prompts. Try installing evolution again, and make sure to select system-xfree86.

What are the results if you run "fink list -i xft" and "fink list -i

thank all again for helping earlier, but now, closer to finishing, i

-----------------------------------------------------

the only thing i can think of is that perhaps something with xfree86.
since i have a working install of apple's X11, i chose (during the
dependency stage) for only system-xfree86 to be installed as a
placeholder. and i think that part worked, because when it was
compiling, it reported finding apple's X11 and said everything was okay.

any ideas on this one? and i'll keep a sharper eye out for typos this
time.
