If this belongs in the beginners list tell me so and I'll continue it there.

My system: imac g3/400, 10.2.6, fink package manager version: 0.13.3, fink distribution version: 0.5.3.cvs. The fink cvs version I'm running is several months - perhaps more than half a year - old.

My problem: I can't update fink. I've tried using these three commands:

fink selfupdate
fink selfupdate-cvs
fink update-all

They all stop with this:

<snip 1>
cd lib && make all
make[2]: Nothing to be done for `all'.
cd lib && make install-lib libdir='/Volumes/apps_users/apps_fink_(sw)/src/libiconv-1.7-6/ libiconv-1.7/lib' includedir='/Volumes/apps_users/apps_fink_(sw)/src/libiconv-1.7-6/ libiconv-1.7/lib'
/bin/sh ./../autoconf/mkinstalldirs /Volumes/apps_users/apps_fink_(sw)/src/libiconv-1.7-6/libiconv-1.7/lib
/bin/sh: -c: line 1: syntax error near unexpected token `/Volumes/apps_users/apps_fink_(s'
/bin/sh: -c: line 1: `/bin/sh ./../autoconf/mkinstalldirs /Volumes/apps_users/apps_fink_(sw)/src/libiconv-1.7-6/libiconv-1.7/> lib'
make[2]: *** [install-lib] Error 2
make[1]: *** [install-lib] Error 2
make: *** [all] Error 2
### execution of make failed, exit code 2
Failed: compiling libiconv-1.7-6 failed
</snip 1>

At the beginning of the output I make a choice, see <snip 2> below. In the middle there's a long bit involving libiconv, see <snip 3>. Installing just libiconv doesn't work either. The /sw directory is a symlink to a directory on another partition. It's worked fine before, including updating fink itself. Very recently I reinstalled Mac OS on a new hard drive and simply made a new symlink to the fink root directory which had been copied - using carbon copy cloner - to a non-OS partition on the new drive. Running fink applications works at present. After extensive searching I've found nothing to help me out here.

Any ideas? If you need more info I'll be happy to supply it.

My guess would be that the parentheses in your directory name are causing the problem.
