I'm a native linux user (Slackware/SuSE) and I've toyed around with FreeBSD a bit in the past. Typically in a linux installation, a sound device is located in /dev/dsp format with some kind of OSS architecture if I'm not mistaken. I'm confused as to how sound works in Darwin; mainly I'm concerned about it because after a successful Fink installation, I've installed xmms and the sound works only sometimes (I am running the program over X11 fine). I am using esd currently as the output plugin. It seems that the esd program will not open automatically but when I run "esd" in a shell, xmms works. Anyone know what's going on here? Is there a better output plugin to use than esd because it seems like there is a bad connotation attached to using this sound daemon.
Thanks,
Ermal
