Who invented this goofy language anyway? :-/ I read "get installed" to mean "where do I put my my.cnf file, now that I've created it," but I think you wrote "get installed" to mean "where did fink install a my.cnf file that I can look at and maybe change." Neither my.cnf nor .my.cnf exists unless you create it. You can create my.cnf in /sw/share/mysql or in some other place whose location escapes me at the moment. I *think* all mysql clients will look for it in either place when they connect to the server. You can also put a "private" .my.cnf in your home directory, which only effects clients you execute (i.e., if I connect to the server, I have my own ~/.my.cnf file separate from yours). It would make sense, but I don't know for sure, if the effects from all my.cnf and .my.cnf files are cumulative.
