David-

My perspective is from that of a retired physics teacher who wrote his high school senior theme on computers and has "played" with them since 1967 (an IBM 1620). I've done the Trash 80 (Radio Shack TRS-80, for you young'uns) and the Sinclair ZX80 (kit). There have been many others in between, but the Macintosh platform remains my favorite.

I've always been interested in using the computer as a tool for teaching. With some of the earlier machines this was a struggle, to say the least. Now that I'm "retired," I have more time to play. Fink satisfies my "geekiness" by allowing me to crawl under the machine and try to understand better how it ticks. As with most shade-tree mechanics, I sometimes turn the wrong screw, but the excellent fink.sf.net documentation pages and the phenomenal crew of Finkers on the lists always help me set it right. I'm still just a beginner.

It's not all fun and games, though. I'm also an Apple-authorized repair person now working as an independent contractor for my former school district. I have made good use of fink-installed applications, especially gnumeric as a substitue for Excel. I've also had the opportunity to demonstrate and advocate Fink in my capacity as the Apple Ambassador for our user group.

I'm very grateful to the Fink team for all the work they have cheerfully donated to what is obviously a "labor of love." Thank you!

Stan
