CVS can leave stale locks on the server, either because the server dumps core, or because a client is forcibly quit. The usual practice is to run scripts periodically which hunt for stale locks and deleting any locks older than a specified time period. SourceForge has said they will be upgrading anonymous CVS server very soon, but at the same time, the performance of the current server appears to be growing worse.

I track several projects by doing daily CVS updates. Several of the SourceForge hosted projects have been blocked by stale locks for a couple of days now, which is unusual. Being an optimist, I can only assume the SourceForge staff is busy preparing the new system aren't keeping as close an eye on the existing server as they have in the past.

A 600% CVS performance boost was announced as being only days away on August 29th. I'm not going to hold my breath, but I hope the situation improves soon.

This sounds like an indication of a busy server, but I've never seen it before so I thought I'd ask.

Doing selfupdate-cvs, I've been getting stuck waiting for a cvs lock on stable/main/finkinfo (only) for the past 24 hours or so. It _flies_ through fink/10.2, fink/10.2/stable, fink/10.2/stable/crypto, and fink/10.2/stable/crypto/finkinfo and fink/10.2/stable/main...
but when it gets to fink/10.2/stable/main, it waits indefinitely:

> sudo /sw/bin/fink selfupdate-cvs
...
cvs server: Updating fink/10.2/stable/main
U fink/10.2/stable/main/.cvsignore
cvs server: Updating fink/10.2/stable/main/finkinfo
cvs server: [21:53:44] waiting for anoncvs_fink's lock in /cvsroot/fink/dists/10.2/stable/main/finkinfo
cvs server: [21:54:14] waiting for anoncvs_fink's lock in /cvsroot/fink/dists/10.2/stable/main/finkinfo
cvs server: [21:54:44] waiting for anoncvs_fink's lock in /cvsroot/fink/dists/10.2/stable/main/finkinfo
[ repeat forever, every 30 seconds ]

Busy server? It's new to me.
Thanks,
Dan
