Fink is humming along fine on my iBook, but now I need to make a second installation on an elderly iMac. While it has the Dev Tools installed, I'd rather avoid recompiling too much stuff. So I have two questions:
(1)
It's not completely clear to me if I can symlink /sw to another partition and still do binary installs? (It's one of those iMacs where you must make the root partition less than 8 GB, and I'd rather not crowd it more than it already is.) The source for my concern is in these docs:
http://fink.sourceforge.net/doc/bundled/install-first.php
If you intend to use the binary distribution (through apt-get / dselect),
you must install to /sw. Unfortunately, binary packages are not relocatable.
http://fink.sourceforge.net/doc/users-guide/install.php you should use the default - /sw . Only that will allow you to install downloaded binary packages later on.
I'd think that apt-get will follow symlinks, but can anyone confirm?
(2)
Failing that (or for stuff that just isn't in the binary distribution), I guess I might as well transfer .debs from the iBook and fink install them. Depending on the answer to (1) I might even use the iBook as my own apt-get repository. I believe this was discussed on the mailing list, and I intend to search it for that info -- unless, that is, a howto exists somewhere that would detail the best available strateg(y|ies)?
Any and all pointers on the subject would be greatly appreciated.
