That's disconcerting. cvs has been OK for me on both of my machines so far.

I noticed the first problem on my G4 TiBook...I ran
self-update-cvs (in FinkCommander) and nothing happened for
a long time...I checked the processes running and found that
the cvs command was using over 100M of memory and growing!
So I killed it and tried again, and this time it ran without
problems (and only a few M of memory). This is similar to
the sorts of things I've noticed on my work machine (also a
dual G4, I typo'd in my earlier message below). cvs is one
of the commands that was replaced in the 10.2.8 update, but
I guess the source of the trouble is likely to be much deeper.

Hopefully we'll get away with it until they bring
out a fixed version...

No problems on my G4 PowerBook, and my dual G4 tower seems OK, too--I
actually lost DHCP service, but found where somebody posted the
ethernet driver. Mail.app and Entourage crash occasionally, but both
always have on that machine. I have no Fink-related or X-related
problems to report.

Uh-oh. I didn't know they withdrew 10.2.8. I have it
installed, (I rushed in to fix the sshd hole) and on my G3
XDarwin is "quitting unexpectedly" from time to time, but
everything else seems to work OK, and I haven't had trouble
(so far) with my iBook or TiBook.

There have been a few other funnies, like xclock gave me a
malloc/free error just once, but I was noticing a random
stuff like that from before installing 10.2.8 anyway.

Hmmm...I don't fancy having to back out of this one, I had
to do a system archive-reinstall a couple of months back and
lost /etc/fonts, which took me ages to figure out...

Anyone got any advice either way on this? Thanks...

Michèle: That's unfortuate, but I doubt it has anything to do with
installing the fribidi package. Perhaps it has more to do with
Apple's
premature release of 10.2.8 (which was withdrawn after one day).

I had the same error, and found that I had to install fribidi
itself,
in addition to the -dev and -shlibs packages.
I've done that and now whenever once I launch XDarwin (or Apple's
X11)
everything freezes either under X or under 10.2.8: Finder, Mail,
Safari, Terminal, any click in the Finder, any ls in Terminal or
xterm.
