thanks once more for your help.

no, also rebuilding of esound doesn't cure the problem. I noticed that xmms 
needs esound and it works fine.

The problem I guess is connected to this 'arts' package (What is the sound 
server artsplay is looking for ???)
As you indicated, having no sound in kde is maybe a common problem in the 
portation of kde to MacOSX. Since it is not urgent (but nevertheless a pity) I 
might wait since one of you clever guys can solve the problem.

Maybe I am going to try once more with gnome (which I anyway liked more) but
also there I had some problems after my upgrade.
