After a lengthy search of the fink-users archives, it seems this problem has gone totally unanswered.

This is a lie. There have been answers, and the package description has been corrected twice as a consequence of these discussions.

If you want to help find out why some people are still having this problem, you could try to find out which precise version of the package description you are in fact using. The version number 10.18-2 is not sufficient to distinguish the different revisions.

You would first have to check whether you are using the 10.2 or the 10.2-gcc3.3 tree. If you don't know, it's the former. Then look into the file /sw/fink/10.2/unstable/main/finkinfo/graphics/netpbm10.info (or 10.2-gcc3.3 instead of 10.2) and look for a line similar to

printf "package\n%i\n\n\n\n\n\n\n" | ./installnetpbm

What do you have there?
