I just upgraded to os x 10.3, and had to wipe my hard drive to do so (whole other story). so i decided it would be easier to reinstall fink than to try to copy it from my backup. so i downloaded the binary, installed, and ran "fink selfupdate" as suggested on the fink website. this came up with some minor error that didn't look like a big deal. so i ran dselect, selected all the packages i wanted, and did something else for the five hours needed to download. one of the packages it downloaded was x11, though i didn't select it explicitly (it must have gotten in there as a dependency somewhere). after downloading, it couldn't complete the compile because it didn't want to delete the existing x11 that came with 10.3. i ran apple's x11 just to see if it worked, and the user name that came up was "I have no name!". and the same in Terminal. i tried switching users, but at the login screen nothing would work (not my username nor root, which had previously been enabled). so now i'm stuck, unable to log on to my computer. when i restart the login screen comes up fine, but nothing works to get me in. please help. i *really* do not want to wipe the disk, reinstall, and have to set everything up again from my backup. thanks, Peter
