Hi,
this is a rather general question, but becomes particulary important under Fink/Unix environments.
I am greatly missing some important keys on my French iBook keyboard: backslash, pipe, tilda, insert/overwrite toggle to name only a few ..
.. are those not available at all, or are there any special shortcuts to obtain them ?
Do you mean you are new to the Mac and don't know how to get these in general, or are they not working in some particular application?
In the first case, you might want to run the keyboard viewer palette to show you all the keys you can type. Under OSX 10.2 or earlier, this used to be an application in /Applications/Utilities, Key Caps.app. In OSX 10.3, you find it in the "International" System Preferences under Input Menu, Keyboard Viewer.
The standard Apple "three finger salutes" are
\ = alt-shift-/
| = alt-shift-L
[ = alt-shift-(
~ = alt-n + space
{ = alt-(OK, only 2 for the curly brace. But if you can, avoid French keyboards, even in France. Their layout is really not made for use with computers.
