I do have a /usr/local/lib/libgcc.dylib. Removing this, however, seems
like a bad idea. tar stops working with a dyld error complaining it cannot
find this file. Or was the file you were referring to an old copy of this
that'd gone astray? According to locate, this was the only libgcc.dylib in
my system.

No, that library causes problems with many FInk packages. You may be able to work around the tar issue. What do you get if you run "which tar" in a Terminal window?
