I'm wondering what to do now - I've only had this new Panther system running for a day so I could just install it over again. I thought I was doing the right thing upgrading perl, since I'd previously upgraded from perl 5.6 to 5.8 whilst running Jaguar and didn't realise there would be a problem. Oh well.
If anyone's got a rescue suggestion for me, then let me know, otherwise I might reinstall again tonight.

It wouldn't be hard to edit your copy of Fink (or the Fink sources) to
work with perl 5.8.2. However, then you would be frustrated because we
don't have any perl modules for 5.8.2, only for 5.8.1. Also, unless you
made the same choices of compile-time options as Apple did (such as
threading), you'll have trouble with mixing and matching.
