Ah I think I was too hasty with thinking that this had worked. I just realised that further up in the output of installing gnome-games, I got the same error messages - but for some reason while just installing gnome-games it didn't bail out, whereas it does when I install it as part of bundle-gnome.
here is some of the output from fink rebuild gnome-games, after already rebuilding libxml2 and scrollkeeper:

Thanks Martin. It gets a bit stranger now. I followed this advice and gnome-games installed fine after rebuilding those three packages one after the other. But then when I continued with my gnome installation by re-issuing fink install bundle-gnome, fink wanted to reinstall gnome-games, and I got the same errors while it reinstalled the .deb. I notice some errors I hadn't noticed before - a whole lot of random question marks ... see below.
This is my annotated and abridged list of what's happened:
here's the final bit as it successfully installs gnome-games:

Cheers, David.

There were two long threads about this on fink-beginners back in August, starting on 08/16 and on 08/23, respectively. You should be able to find them in the sourceforge archives. Several points were made there, but I have a hard time to see a definite conclusion. Maybe Alexander remembers better.
One advice that seemed to have worked at one moment was to rebuild libxml2, scrollkeeper, and then gnome-games. Another suggestion was that that version, 1.4.0.4, did not work at all, and version 2.0.6 should be used instead (which does not exist in 10.3 ATM). Again another was that the compilation was posioned by the presence of libstdc++.a in /usr/local/lib.
