Here was my simple unfruitful interaction.

Can you tell me how to make su work as it is supposed to?

[fink]%fink selfupdate-cvs
sudo /sw/bin/fink selfupdate-cvs

I will now run the cvs command to retrieve the latest package descriptions.
The 'su' command will be used to run the cvs command as the user 'joe'. After
that, the core packages will be updated right away; you should then update
the other packages using commands like 'fink update-all'.

su joe -c 'cvs -z3 update -d -P'
? stamp-rel-0.5.3
? 10.2/stable/crypto/finkinfo/curl-ssl-7.10.3-2.info
? 10.2/stable/crypto/finkinfo/cyrus-sasl2-2.1.12-5.info
? 10.2/stable/crypto/finkinfo/cyrus-sasl2-2.1.12-5.patch
? 10.2/stable/crypto/finkinfo/ethereal-ssl-0.9.11-1.info
? 10.2/stable/crypto/finkinfo/ethereal-ssl-0.9.11-1.patch
