I just upgraded from 10.2.8 to 10.3.2. I have then done a fink update (using rsync). Then I ran postinstall.pl. Now the dists directory is pointing to 10.3, and the packages list read by rsync correspond to that (I have unstable enabled).
Now when I want to do an update all fink tries to install perl581.
fink list system-perl
Information about 2184 packages read in 2 seconds.
i system-perl 5.8.1-1 [virtual package representing perl]
system-perl581 5.8.1-1 Placeholder package for manually installed perl 5.8.1
The virtual package is OK. You should see more details with "fink-virtual-pkgs". In particular, it should show "provides: perl581-core". There is no info file corresponding to virtual packages.
The system-perl581 package should not show up at all. Try "dpkg -l system-perl581" to see if it is perhaps partially installed. Did you have a self-installed perl-581 before you upgraded to Panther?

First, I would think there should be a copy of the same packages in 10.3 also, and there are none. Second we have only files like
No. There is now the virtual package mechanism.
system-perl581-5.8.1-1.info, no system-perl-5.8.1-1.info. Should that be the same?
No. The pm581 packages now have a dependency on perl581-core | system-perl581 and perl581-core is provided by the virtual system-perl-5.8.1. I don't know if a real system-perl581 package will appear in the future, maybe for people who want to replace the Panther perl-5.8.1 by their own installation, but right now there is none in the 10.3 tree.
