I added the -ls option to xterm in my ~/.xinitrc (the other stuff relating to xterm is handled in my ~/.Xdefaults file), and that does what I want regarding the PATH. Well, I have other X11 programs that call xterm for various tasks; that's why I wanted the PATH straightened out.
