I've seen that "Optimizing disk ('null')" message at times on my system--my guess was that the Installer application was trying to optimize the disk image. Did you run the installer from the disk image? If so, try copying the contents of the disk image over to a normal folder on your system and see if that works--
Well, okay, what happened was by running the installer without trying to do anything else at the same time, it went to completion, but took a long time to finish optimizing. AND, it went through a 0-100% 'Optimize Volume "(null)" and then immediately did another Optimize Volume on the HD. Weird.
But it gets weirder. Next I wanted to install the Security update 2002-12-19.pkg.
Same thing happened; I was formulating this email and the installer crapped out while optimizing the hard disk. Screen fades to streaks of multicolors, mainly 'grape and tangerine'...cool!
Force reboot, rerun installer, no other apps running. Completes successfully but took an hour to finish optimizing.
I hope this is not a sign of more nonsense to expect from Panther. What could be wrong?
