I've used fink for a couple of years now. My core needs are X11,
emacs, xemacs, R, f77. So far I've managed to compile these from
source through "install", moving from OS X 10.1 to OS X 10.2. But I'm
far from a power user.

I so far haven't moved to 10.3, but now have a new G5 running 10.3.
So I need to install fink. I'd like to install the same packages
listed above, and am thinking of dabbling with an Apple X11 + fink
combination (I've so far stayed away from Apple's X11).

My question: do you recommend I go with binaries; or try to build
where possible? I'm aware that emacs has been problematic.

I would recommend trying Apple's X11. It has improved greatly since it's start and, especially, for the latest revision. It now has equivalents of rooted and rootless windowing.

Nearly everything is available now for 10.3. I can't speak specifically for your packages, but in general, building from source has always worked well for me. I say "go for it". :-)

Just don't forget: You have to install X11 and the X11 SDK from the XCode disk and developer tools from the XCode disk. Good luck.
