Is system-perl needed in Mac OS X 10.3? The .deb and .info files I have for
system-perl are all in the 10.2 and 10.2-gcc3 trees. However, "fink list system-perl"
produces the following output (even after rebuilding the index):

i system-perl 5.8.1-1 [virtual package representing perl]

In the same way system-xfree86 and friends automatically exist if they're found, system-perl is now a "virtual" package that's automatically detected based on what version of perl is installed in /usr/bin. If you ran the exact same fink program on a 10.2 machine it would say it's 5.6.0-1 for you instead, automatically.

You can't remove it because it doesn't actually exist in dpkg as a package, it's faked by Fink.
