Whatever was going wrong for me has fixed itself, I just
managed to run selfupdate (using rsync) on both my TiBook
(with FinkCommander) and my G4 (command line).  It used the
master US mirror:
rsync -az -v  rsync://master.us.finkmirrors.net/finkinfo//TIMESTAMP 
/sw/fink/TIMESTAMP.tmp
(dunno why, I'm in the UK, and configured fink to know this,
I usually get the ?finnish? one).  No stray console error
messages.

thanks to anyone who fixed something in the back there and
didn't mention it...
