so, selfupdate always used to work fine for me. i upgraded fink commander to the latest and now i get, after pages and pages of stuff:
Failed: Can't move "/sw/fink" out of the way

Do you have a /sw/fink.old directory? If yes, move it out of the way (rename it to fink.veryold or something, or delete it) and try again.

that was it. thanks. how did that happen, anyway?? i'm sure i'll forget what to do next time and have to search mailing list archives or something. perhaps this can be added as a FAQ.

This happens when you switch from selfupdate-rsync to selfupdate-cvs several times. I think when it finishes setting up selfupdate-cvs successfully, it tells you that you can now remove the fink.old directory, and most people probably do it. So hitting an existing fink.old directory is a sufficiently rare event to allow not having a FAQ entry or, for that matter, an automatic procedure to take care of it. If you think it should be taken care of and you have an idea how to do it, please feel free to submit a patch for the SelfUpdate.pm module :-)
