I went to update-all today, and found that gd2 has a dependency on freetype2-dev and therefore on freetype2-shlibs. If I update this package will I have problems with future builds of GNOME2.4 or KDE? I seem to remember that I had to remove freetype2 packages when compiling the latter desktop systems. Thanks for any info about this matter.
The freetype2 packages for 10.3 were fixed some time ago so that they are no longer used automatically, even when they are installed. You have to point at them specifically if you want to use them. The gd2 package doesn't do this, so it doesn't actually use freetype2-dev. I don't know why it has a build dependency on it. Ask the maintainer.
The packages that you probably had to remove were the freetype (without "2") and freetype-hinting packages. They break things, due to incompatibility of freetype1 and freetype2 headers.
