When I try cvs, I don't encounter any errors. Unfortunately, I also don't get any 10.3 packages. Just so you know what I mean:
[localhost:~] [**myuserid**]% cd /sw/fink/10.3/
[localhost:/sw/fink/10.3] [**myuserid**]% ls

drwxr-xr-x 16 [**myuserid**] admin 544 12 May 21:01 ..
-rw-r--r-- 1 [**myuserid**] admin 989 3 Jul 2003 IDEAS
drwxr-xr-x 4 root admin 136 12 May 18:01 stable
drwxr-xr-x 4 root admin 136 12 May 18:01 unstable
[localhost:/sw/fink/10.3] [**myuserid**]% ls stable

This looks list /sw/fink/10.3 is owned by you (and so fink will su to your user when doing selfupdate), but stable and unstable dirs are owned by root.

Please do `sudo chown -R **myuserid** /sw/fink/10.3`

That did it -- my thanks to both you and Dr. Hansen!

(And I probably should've noticed that, but I'm glad the two of you were there to catch it.)

Gratefully,
James
