Just for kicks, I went ahead and started the mozilla install again. If it should work now that I've cleaned up the freetype confusion, then great! But if you think the problem is somewhere else, or you noticed some other boneheaded thing I forgot, please feel free to point it out. E.g., do I actually need to get rid of ALL freetype/freetype2 files for this to work?

Mozilla installed successfully. Woo-hoo! And thanks.

PS Is there a safe way to remove unused/upgraded 10.2 and 10.2-gcc3.3 packages? Or should I let the proverbial sleeping dogs lie?

PPS I'm glad you both have day jobs to support your real careers as fink experts. Without you, this would take a lot longer, and I wouldn't learn so much.

You may need to remove freetype2-shlibs if mozilla doesn't build (especially if you get exactly the same errors). If this is the case, the problem is confusion between libraries installed by the freetype2 package and similar ones that come with X11.

The problem is resolved, but if you wouldn't mind a question... is freetype/freetype2 mostly for font-rendering in window managers? Enlightenment depended on it, but I noticed in the fvwm2.info file that fvwm2 does not.

It's in the graphics section, but since GIMP (gimp2) doesn't require it either, I'm left wondering: what's it for (besides the obvious TrueType/PostScript font rendering)? Can I go ahead and just remove the whole thing?

I think that's right. Freetype is included with X11, but some packages need particular versions of the libraries, so I believe that's why there are separate freetype packages.
