The only time I've seen this is when it really, truly is a compiler bug. What version of XCode do you have installed? If you haven't already, you may need to update to XCode 1.1 or 1.2. It's been quite some time since I've tested qt builds on the XCode that shipped with panther some time ago...
Also, that version of (stable) qt3 is available from the bindist, you can get it with apt-get if you want:
sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install qt3
